International Day of Child Victims of Aggression

Stop the Arms Trade Week 3rd - 11th June 2006

The afternoon of 4th June 2006 saw over 50 people gather at Defence Munitions Centre Beith for International Day of Child Victims of Aggression and Stop the Arms Trade Week.

We were greeted by lots of police, and a helicopter buzzing overhead. Banners reading "Making a Killing", "Built in Beith to Murder in Iraq", "Babies not Bombs" and placards about the effects of Depleted Uranium were hung along the fence. Photos of children killed in Iraq were tied to the fence, along with flowers, labels, poems, and childrens clothes.

The Glasgowkiss clowns kept the police Evidence Gathering Team confused with their antics, and played games with the kids.  People shared food, kids chalked anti-war slogans on the layby roadway outside the gate, and some folk had a wander around the outside of the fence, accompanied by police vans and the helicopter.

A list of some of the young lives lost, which included their age, where and how they had been killed, was handed to the MoD through the mesh of the gate, who agreed to hand it to the manager of the site.

Names of some the Iraqi children killed in the war were read out. Those listed only represented a fraction of those killed, and for each child listed, there's another nine lives not identified. At first only a few people read out the names to those of us who had gathered for the day. But when someone turned around to read a name whilst looking through the main gates of the Beith site, everyone instinctively crowded up to the gate and passed the list between each other taking it in turns to read the names out loud, so they could be heard.
